The statue in the foyer of the Graduate Centre is called Mentis and was sculpted by Hannah Stewart based on a design by Sophia Álvarez Barnes.

Mentis represents the struggle that we all experience at some point, in some way, one that is often extremely isolating. The open structure of the sculpture signifies that help and support can be reached, no matter how difficult things may seem.

HRH The Princess Royal, Chancellor of the University of London, officially opened the new Graduate Centre at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) on Tuesday 13 June 2017 shortly after the installation of Mentis.
